1. Inappropriate content
1.1  Sexually explicit content is banned
1.1a  Porn, explicit smut, explicit links or images are strictly prohibited. This is not restricted to human anatomy.
1.1b  Writing may contain reference to and non-explicit description and mention of sexual content, but must be spoiler tagged, with an explicit warning on content.
1.1c  Images with explicit nudity are strictly prohibited.
1.1d  See 4.15a for subforum rules that are more lenient with sexually explicit content.

1.2  Gore, excessive blood, and mutilation is restricted
1.2a  All content with gore, excessive blood, and/or mutilation is strictly prohibited.
1.2b  Writing may contain reference to and non-explicit description and mention of gore, excessive blood, and/or mutilation, but must be spoiler tagged, with an explicit warning on content.
1.2c  Linking sites with non-explicit gore, excessive blood, and/or mutilation, so long as it is not a shocksite, may be done with a significant and explicit warning on content and the actual link in a spoiler tag. If you are unsure if content would be inappropriate and require tagging, please ask contact a staff member.
1.2d  Images with gore, excessive blood, and/or mutilation are strictly prohibited, in every context. There may be some less-explicit leniency with specific subforums. See 4.15a for details.
1.2e  To clarify: the level of gore, blood and mutilation described in the books is okay in writing and book-related discussion. If you are unsure where your content stands, please message staff about it.

1.3  Imagery of drug use is banned
1.3a  Images of explicit drug use are strictly prohibited.
1.3b  Writing may contain reference to and non-explicit description and mention of drug use, but an explicit warning on content must be provided. A spoiler tag is not required but encouraged.
1.3c  Explicit description of drug use is strictly prohibited.

1.4  Rape, physical torture, and suicide are strongly discouraged in every context, but not outright banned
1.4a  Significant warning must be given if content has any of these.
1.4b  Writing may contain reference to and non-explicit description and mention of rape, physical torture, and suicide, but must be spoiler tagged, with an explicit warning on content.
1.4c  Explicit details on rape fall under 1.1, explicit detail on torture falls under 1.2, explicit detail on suicide can falls under 1.2 and/or 1.3.

1.5  Miscellaneous
1.5a  Phone numbers, residential addresses, and emails are prohibited and will be edited out. No punishment comes from posting your own details, only a word of advice on personal security from staff.
1.5b  Posting someone else's details is illegal and offenders will be punished.
1.5c  Swearing and explicit language is usually okay. There is a Swear Filter, turned on by default, so most words will be filtered out by the system. Using explicit language to insult or target someone is a violation of rule 2.9a.
1.5d  Inappropriate comments include but are not limited to: racist, sexist or discriminatory remarks; highly controversial conversation topics (outside of Debating*); imagery depicting any of the previous descriptions. Content not listed here that the staff deem inappropriate will also be a warnable offense.
* = This only applies if, after persisted informal (not on record) warnings by staff, a user posts controversial conversation topics outside of the Debating subforum.

2. Expected behaviour
2.6  Being contributive vs being spammy
2.6a  Relevant messages such as "Skulduggery is dead lol" are okay, but "lol" "lmao" and single word posts are spam. "I agree with that ETGuy said; Skulduggery is dead" is fine. Some subforums may have different rules. See 4.15a for details.
2.6b  Just posting images is not okay, except in Off Topic and some forum games

2.7  One account per user
2.7a  Making a new account and pretending to be someone else is prohibited.
2.7b  Making a new account just to get a new username (and then using the new account) is not okay.
2.7c  Making a new account for personal reasons (such as real name, contact details, previous account deleted) is okay, but discussion with staff beforehand is encouraged as this is a case by case issue. Administrators will change your username if it has personal details.

2.8  Thread revival policy
2.8a  Generally, it's okay to revive threads that are open ended: "What's your favourite colour?" "Who is your favourite SP character?" are okay to revive.
2.8b  RP and Suggestion/Support/Update threads usually aren't allowed to be revived, unless by topic creators (or with permission from) and staff, respectively.
2.8c  Reviving threads in the New Members section is not okay.
2.8d  Debating allows relevant revival. See 4.15a for details.

2.9  Respecting other users and staff
2.9a  Targeted negative behaviour will not be tolerated. What constitutes as targeted negative behaviour is up to the staff's discretion. Refer to 3.11c if you feel action by staff was inappropriate.
2.9b  Being volatile to staff will not be tolerated, and may result in a small ban.
2.9c  Skype and Discord chats are also considered "on-site", meaning inappropriate behaviour in these should also be reported to staff.
2.9d  Especially important in Debating subforum. See 4.15a for details.

3. Punishment
3.10  What happens when rules are broken
3.10a  Breaking rules 1.3-1.4b, 2.6, 2.8-2.9 is minor rule breaking and will lead to three warnings before a short ban.
3.10b  Breaking rules 1.1-1.2, 1.5b and 1.5d is serious rule breaking, and will lead to a short ban.
3.10c  Continued rule breaking after a ban will lead to one warning and then a longer ban. Continued misconduct will result in consideration for permaban.
3.10d  Breaking rule 2.7 is treated as a case-by-case basis.

3.11  Staff conduct
3.11a  If a staff member is behaving inappropriately, provide screenshots/links and private message an Administrator.
3.11b  Skype and Discord chats are also considered "on-site", meaning inappropriate staff behaviour in these should also be reported to an Administrator (even if user is not forum staff).
3.11c  If you feel your warning or ban wasn't justified, message an Administrator with your reasoning and the situation will be examined.

4. Other things to note
4.12  Issues with the Forum Rules
4.12a  Contact a member of staff with your detailed issue, or post in the General Suggestions & Site Feedback thread.
4.12b  Issue with punishment system: See 3.11c.

4.13  Usernames, avatars, and signatures
4.13a  Usernames can't exceed 20 characters. Usernames can be requested in the Name Change Requests thread. Making a new account to get a new username breaks rule 2.7b.
4.13b  Avatars must be 130x130 pixels before they can be uploaded or used as a url. Avatars cannot be inappropriate, and depending on the rule they break, the punishment will vary. See 1.1-1.5 for what is inappropriate.
4.13c  Signatures may only contain one image, and that image cannot exceed 400x150 pixels (large images will be automatically resized). Signatures can only have 300 characters maximum. Signatures cannot be inappropriate, and depending on the rule they break, the punishment will vary. See 1.1-1.5 for what is inappropriate.

4.14  Terminology
4.14a  "Tagging"means placing spoiler tags around the mentioned content and giving a warning beforehand. Example: WARNING: Contains skeletons
skeletons
4.14b  A short ban typically lasts 3-5 days. A long ban can last from one month to three months, depending on the severity of the issue.
4.14c  To "revive" a thread means to post in a thread that has the "Warning: this topic has not been posted in for at least 90 days" message above Quick Reply.

4.15  Subforum specific rules
4.15a  Some subforums have rules that either reiterate, have more detail, or explain exemption from some of the above rules. Unless otherwise stated in subforum rules, these rules apply to every subforums.

The staff have agreed to add the following section:

Quote
1.5d  Inappropriate comments include but are not limited to: racist, sexist or discriminatory remarks; highly controversial conversation topics (outside of Debating*); imagery depicting any of the previous descriptions. Content not listed here that the staff deem inappropriate will also be a warnable offense.
* = This only applies if, after persisted informal (not on record) warnings by staff, a user posts controversial conversation topics outside of the Debating subforum.

We believe this is common sense, though clarity goes a long way. Offensive content falls under this category. Most of what is considered inappropriate will be up to the staff's discretion, though we encourage members to report anything they feel is inappropriate.
