« on: December 05, 2016, 10:53:38 PM »
This thread is the forums very own book club sign up thread!

We will be reading one book a month due to some members having other commitments.

Write something as a reply along with a book suggestion for the first month if you're interested!

I'm super interested!

As a first book I'd recommend a classic bestseller of some kind; something that everyone around the world will be able to find at their local library. Perhaps Frankenstein? I haven't read that yet.

I'd love to take part! A classic would be a pleasure to read.

Sure, sign me up, why not.

I've recently been looking at Death at Intervals (or Death with Interruptions, originally As IntermitĂȘncias da Morte) by JosĂ© Saramago, a writer I've never read before, because its concept sounded vaguely interesting and it had a nifty cover when I saw it at Waterstones. The concept: one day, everybody stops dying, first to much celebration, then to some horror. Then, death comes back, and starts leaving velvet letters to people a week before their death. The book itself, meanwhile, is pretty... loose, grammatically, going for a sort of stream-of-consciousness style. There are no capital letters for names or other proper nouns, the comma is abused, quotation marks are left out, and the paragraphing is pretty scarce. This, I'm sure, is probably pretty frustrating to actually read.

I don't know if it's actually that great a book, and I've heard some mixed things. But hey, I'm probably going to read it at some point, so may as well drag you as many other people into it as well.

As far as classics go, Frankenstein is a pretty fine choice. I've read it before, but I'd be happy to go through it again. Also, I'd get to lord over whatever knowledge I already have before going in. My only warning over going something "classic" immediately on the first time is that, at the risk of sounding obvious, they tend to be a bit dated. Worth reading, absolutely, but I'm all for starting things out with things that are relatively easy to digest. Frankenstein isn't too bad on that front, though. But you go to a Book where all the Common nouns are capitalised, though, let me tell you, That is a Hassle and a Hell of a Time, especially when the Way it's done seems very Haphazard.

Finally, someone else who gets this.

I'm definitely all for a book club, though I mightn't be able to participate every week.

Classic sounds good - I'd love to go for Dracula, as I still haven't read it.

Otherwise, I'd 100% recommend Knights of Borrowed Dark by Dave Rudden. Yep, not a classic, but it's really, really great and I'm definitely up for re-reading it :)

The list of people is;
Icarus
Andro
Adelina
Sov
Ravenrue
Manga
Veritas Grim
Nixion Strange
Marfach
E.T.
Harry

I think that's the complete list. Sign ups are not closed, infact you can sign up whenever, as long as you post a reply or send me a message so I know you're joining.

We will be reading a book every month. I think we should do it so one person chooses a book a month.

In honor of the gracious return of one of the forums dearest and most liked members. Andro will choose the first book. I think we should start the book club in the new year, get Christmas out the way if that works with everyone. If anyone is unable to get the book we are reading, just send me a pm and we'll work something out.

I'm definitely all for a book club, though I mightn't be able to participate every week.

We will be reading a book a month due to people being unable to participate every week.

Any questions?

I might not always be able to read a book a month, but I'll give it a go!
